A Brief History of Auto Lifts

Before the invention of lifts, mechanics would attempt to slide under the vehicle to figure out what was wrong. It was dark, it was difficult to maneuver, and it didn't allow anyone who wasn't slender to fit into the space. Over time, this apparatus has been developed and changed to meet the needs of mechanics and automobile owners. Learn about the evolution of auto lifts and how they've developed into the tool your mechanic uses today.

Ground Lift

In order to remedy the problem of being able to fit under the vehicle, the first solution that was used was excavation. A vehicle would drive onto a small ramp where there would be a hole underneath for the mechanic. By digging into the ground, mechanics could fit under the vehicle and have room to maneuver and make the necessary repairs. It was a good solution that was strong and durable; however, it was also very expensive to install. As such, there were very few garages that could afford to add them.

Above-Ground Lift

Once the new technology hit Europe, they took it and developed the first above-ground rotary lifts. The European lifts fit the smaller, narrower European cars, so when they made their way to America there were some issues. Mechanics had a difficult time getting in and out of a vehicle without scratching the side of the vehicle. This meant that after using the lift, mechanics would have to do some bodywork to repair the minor damage. Although it was easier to see what was happening and maneuver under the vehicle, the time to complete work on each vehicle was taking longer with the repairs needed to fix the dings.

American Lift

Eventually, the European technology was used to develop an American auto lift. This one was wider and angled so mechanics could enter and exit the vehicle without any problems. Since then, a portable lift has been developed, allowing mechanics to bring the lift to the vehicle wherever it needs to be lifted. The technology for hydraulic lifts continues to be used to help simplify people's lives. For example, you may have seen the scissor lift with a platform for a person to stand on it, using it to wash building windows, film a movie, paint a high ceiling, or completing other tasks that require height.

Thanks to the development of these hydraulic lifts, a mechanic's job has the equipment needed to do the job without having to slide under the vehicle or make expensive alterations to the garage.
